WARD 3 &
CARDIAC SURGERY HIGH DEPENDENCY UNIT
| Ward 3 is a busy and challenging 27 bed specialist Cardiothoracic unit with a high throughput of patients in a friendly environment. It currently includes 9 High Dependency beds, with a further 6 monitored beds and 8 telemetry beds. |

All our staff are able to rotate between Cardiac Surgery HDU and the ward, resulting in a close team of highly skilled staff. Staff also have the opportunity to rotate throughout the Manchester Heart Centre, and we work closely with the Cardiothoracic Liaison Team and the Nurse Clinician. We encourage staff members to become involved in the active link worker system which covers many specialist areas.
We have recently increased our nursing establishment to allow an even higher ratio of staff per patient. Student nurses are allocated to our unit for both their critical care and surgical learning experiences. We also have Adaptation Nurses, Cadet Nurses and we are a pilot site for the Foundation Degree Practitioner Training.
We have a dedicated Staff Development Sister in our area to provide clinical teaching and support and to meet the development needs of both junior and senior staff. All new members of staff are given induction, orientation, preceptorship, mentors, objectives, weekly teaching, quarterly cardiothoracic study days and regular appraisals. We provide funding and study leave for a wide variety of courses and study days for personal and professional development, including the cardiothoracic degree. We promote evidence based care and clinical benchmarking. Ward 3 and Cardiac Surgery High Dependency Unit are constantly expanding and offer excellent opportunities for career progression.
