The
Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit provides intensive care for post-operative
cardiac surgery patients. The unit currently has eight beds but the introduction
of national Service Frameworks, expansion probable for 2003.
At present, our client group includes a large number of “offpump” patients – surgery performed on the beating heart – and MIDCAB (minimally invasive coronary artery bypass). |

We create a friendly, welcoming atmosphere for new staff, offering structured working schedules. CSU is busy and challenging with a rapid throughput of patients.
The nurses on the Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit are very autonomous. We pride ourselves on this, yet nurses frequently perform within prescribed limits on their own initiative, implementing changes to patient care. Dynamic and technological nursing responsibilities include the following:
- Care of the patient requiring mechanical ventilation
- Early extubation
- Care
of invasive lines/troubleshooting monitoring
- ECG - Arterial pressure
- Central venous pressure
- Pulmonary artery pressure
- Cardiac output studies
- Arterial blood gas sampling
- Titration of intropic support
- Care
of the patient with epidural in situ
- Care
of the patient with intra-aortic balloon pump in situ
- Care
of the patient undergoing haemofiltration
