Press are invited to attend the HR in the NHS Conference - expected to attract over 2,000 people including NHS staff, HR directors, Chief Executives, board members and trades union representatives - which takes place at the ICC in Birmingham from 4-6 May. John Reid will address the conference at 4.30 on Wednesday 5 May. Other keynote speakers include: Sir Nigel Crisp, NHS Chief Executive - 10am, 5 May Andrew Foster, HR director of the NHS - 10.30 5 May Ben Zander, Conductor of Boston Philharmonic Orchestra and leadership guru - 5pm 4 May Profs Renee Maurborgne and W.Chan Kim, professors at INSEAD Business School and proponents of Tipping Point leadership - 9am 6 May A "NHS Matters" Q&A panel, 12pm on 6 May, will feature Professor Louis Appleby, National Director for Mental Health Dr Roger Boyle, National Director for Heart Disease Professor Aidan Halligan, Deputy Chief Medical Officer Professor Ian Philp, National Director for Older People's Services Professor Mike Richards, National Director for Cancer Sarah Mullally, Chief Nursing Officer Andrew Foster, HR Director of the NHS The following Department of Health documents are also being published at the conference Delivering HR in the NHS Plan 2004 - This is the second annual report of progress in implementing the aims of the HR in the NHS Plan. It highlights achievements and runs through key challenges and next steps. On-line recruitment and retention toolkit for consultants - This web-based toolkit will support recruitment and retention of consultants. It offers doctors a straightforward explanation of initiatives such as the flexible careers scheme and the global recruitment scheme; case studies from trusts implementing these initiatives on a local level, and direct links to the websites and professionals offering employers further information and support. Delivering HR Capacity: leading people, leading change - This resource pack promotes a HR Leadership Qualities framework which will help HR managers to use HR to directly improve the patient experience. Work experience: Building the future of the team - This guide is aimed at NHS managers and explains the benefits of running work experience schemes. It contains local case studies of successful schemes, helpful tips for managers who want to run schemes, and clarifies health and safety issues. IWL: The value of supporting staff who volunteer - This raises the profile of staff who volunteer, and flags up the the new skills which can be developed through volunteering in the community. Good practice initiative booklet - A collection of good practice HR initiatives from trusts, with details of how they impact on staff and patient care. The Modernisation Agency will be publishing Findings and Recommendations from the Hospital at Night project. Copies of all these documents will be available in the media room at the ICC. There will be over 70 breakout sessions at the conference, on issues such as Agenda for Change, HR in PCTs, the skills escalator, international recruitment, the new NHS employers organisation and NHSU. There will also be audiences with Bill Moyes, Foundation Trusts Independent Regulator, and Duncan Brown, Asst Director General of the CIPD, who will be talking about the changing HR agenda. Also present at the conference will be the first graduates in HR leadership from the Department's 'Leadership through effective People Management' programme. This MSc programme, run in partnership with PwC, Harvard Business School, and the University of Erasmus, Rotterdam aims to raise the standard of people management in the NHS.
