Ward 6 is an acute cardiology ward located on the ground floor of the orange zone which provides experience in invasive techniques in addition to the more traditional medical cardiology.

On 23rd June 2006, Ward 17 was moved to a refurbished Ward 6 . Ward 6 is now the official name of the Acute Cardiology Ward.

Originally called Ward 17, it was newly refurbished and opened in September 2002 with 12 monitored beds and 12 Telemetry facilities. As a tertiary referral centre, a large proportion of our client group are received from DGH’s throughout the North West as well as transfers from CCU and medical wards. Invasive procedures taken include:

  • Percutaneous coronary interventions i.e. PTCA/stent and angiogram
  • Permanent pacemaker and internal defibrillator implantation
  • Electrophysiological studies and ablations for the treatment of arrhythmias

As well as the “high tech” cardiology experience found on the ward, we also admit patients with heart failure and bacterial endocarditis requiring a longer stay with us. This provides a good balance with the high throughput of patients requiring more invasive procedures.

Staff development at every grade is of a high priority on Ward 6. We are supported by a dedicated staff development nurse who facilitates the educational needs of our nursing team, working one-to-one with individuals, as well as organising teaching programmes on the ward. Regular appraisals are undertaken of all staff with ample opportunity available for further study. As well as in-house training courses available, we presently have staff undertaking ENB 124 (Coronary Care), ENB 928 (Diabetes) courses as well as completing HDU, diploma and degree level studies. There is ample opportunity to develop your teaching skills as we regularly have nursing students from the University allocated to the ward. We also recognise the important role undertaken by CSWs on the ward and we have a number of staff undertaking the Foundation Degree Programme. Staff on Ward 6 have forged close links with other areas in the Heart Centre through the rotation programme. We are an enthusiastic team and encourage staff to become link workers for infection control, diabetes, health and safety, manual handling, as well as within the ICU outreach team. We promote evidence-based care and work closely with other areas on clinical benchmarking. We are a busy ward. However, we do recognise the need for a social life. We can offer family-friendly working contracts and give staff the opportunity to self-roster the night-duty rota

.

This is an exciting time for Ward 6. Due to service expansion, we intend to increase our bed numbers from 16 to 24 beds. Future developments will also include the introduction of day-case angioplasty and a cardiology HDU bed on Ward 6. In order to take this development forward we will require more dedicated staff to join our team. For further information, contact Linda Whitehead/Vicki Entwistle, Acting Senior Sisters: 0161 276 8900
