Introduction

The Manchester Heart Centre(MHC) is a major provider of secondary and Tertiary Cardiac Services to the population of Great Manchester, the Northwest Region and Beyond. It had adopted strategies to increase the uptake of PTCA over the last year and this strategy continues with an increased throughput of angiography, reducing waiting times these number can further increase.

The commencement of the Rapid Access Chest Pain Clinic will enable earlier assessment of patients, allowing earlier intervention. The MHC sees this development as part of the integrate approach enabling improvement in all aspects of services for patients with coronary heart disease. The MHC has pioneered the OPCAB (off-pump coronary artery bypass) procedure and this has the benefits of faster patient recovery and with greater numbers being performed, the possibilities of reduced stabilisation device costs with associated cost savings. The MHC has consistently audited its surgical results and continued to improve all aspects of its care to patients. The annual audit return has consistently shown cardiac surgery at the MHC outperforming the operative mortality compared to the UK return. The MHC has:-

  • Demonstrated efficient use of consultant time, catheter lab time, theatre utilisation, critical care and bed utilisation.
  • A high target of cases per consultant
  • Delivered its activity targets
  • Numbers of PTCA have increased to their highest total in 2000/1
  • Catheter lab capacity has been quickly and successfully commissioned in short timescales.
  • Demonstrated it has an integrated care plan for coronary heart disease, which focuses on modernisation of its practices and being at the forefront of new procedures and work practices.
